Setsuko (Kinuyo Tanaka) who is married to Mimura (So Yamamura) with no job and drunk most of the time, follows tradition and is faithful to him. Her free-spirited and modernized sister Mariko (Hideko Takamine), tries to connect Setsuko with Hiroshi (Ken Uehara) who just came back from France and Setsuko's former lover.
